Magpies are pests as they attack people and can kill native birds, apart from the annoying noise and mess they make. They prefer areas of open pasture with tall trees nearby for nesting and a lookout. They can be found in farmlands, bush edges, gardens, parks, airports and schools.
They eat a variety of insects, seeds and vegetables. They are known to steal from the nests of other smaller birds taking the eggs and nestlings.
Magpies are particularly aggressive during the nesting season, which starts in June / July and can go through to January. They can patrol up to 5 hectares.
A magpie trap is a simple way to catch and get rid of large numbers of magpies. For bait, consider that magpies love fatty foods, a bit of mince, mutton or bacon fat or even dog roll will soon bring them into the trap.
