The Pukeko is one New Zealand's most recognised native bird. Also known as the purple swamp hen they are extremely vocal with an irritating raucous screech.
Pukekos are found all over New Zealand and are often seen near swampy marshy areas, and low lying ground. They are aggressive and territorial but easily adapt to new habitats. They are reluctant flyers, but are good runners and swimmers
They feed from the ground and are mostly vegetarian but also eat;invertebrates, eggs, frogs, small fish, chicks and mammals. They are regarded as a pest as they uproot young seedlings and also damage and destroy grain, vegetables and crops.
The Pukeko is protected but can be shot during the duck shooting season.
