Rabbits

Rabbits were introduced to New Zealand in the early 1800’s for game and for the fur and meat trade. They rapidly became a serious pest, especially in dry areas.

Rabbits are a pest as they irreparably damage crops and plantings. They also contend with stock for grazing, endanger plant cover, increase soil erosion and destroy vegetable gardens. Seven to ten rabbits eat as much grass as one ewe.

If rabbits are not controlled, the population can reach outstandingly high numbers, and can cause devastating damage. One female rabbit can produce over 30 young a year.

It is up to the landowner to control rabbit populations, and they can be hunted and controlled, anywhere, at any time in any legal or humane manner.
